{"id":351,"date":"2020-07-03T16:28:20","date_gmt":"2020-07-03T16:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/odfl.org\/blog\/?p=351"},"modified":"2020-11-07T04:19:49","modified_gmt":"2020-11-07T04:19:49","slug":"dramatic-results-from-beehive-investment-in-kenya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tgup.org\/blog\/2020\/07\/03\/dramatic-results-from-beehive-investment-in-kenya\/","title":{"rendered":"Dramatic results from beehive investment in Kenya"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"291\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/tgup.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/bees.png\" alt=\"Bees deliver 2-4x boost in crop yields\" class=\"wp-image-352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tgup.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/bees.png 291w, https:\/\/tgup.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/bees-213x300.png 213w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><figcaption>Bees deliver 2-4X boost in crop yields<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, ODFL worked with Kiini Sustainable Initiative to install 53 beehives in southwest Kenya.&nbsp; The goal was to boost crop yields at local schools, farms, farm co-ops, and in regional forests.&nbsp; We just completed our first inventory of the hives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the hives have taken, meaning that they are forming combs inside, breeding, and producing honey.&nbsp; They range from 50% to 70% mature.&nbsp; Most importantly, the pollination effects are encouraging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For crops as diverse as maize (corn), coffee, avocados, beans, paw paw fruit, mangoes, macadamia nuts, and bananas, we are seeing 2X, 3X, and even 4X increases in yields.&nbsp; Additionally, honey production\u2014which lags hive maturity\u2014is starting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Increases in yields are directly tied to increases in incomes.&nbsp; If the yield differential is sustained, the effect will be revolutionary.&nbsp; The hives cost about $100 apiece.&nbsp; We expect to increase our investment in this project in the coming year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ODFL installed 53 beehives in southwest Kenya to boost crop yields at local farms.
