15 de Septiembre, is an urban edge school in Matagalpa with 475 students but it had only 3 classrooms. TGUP student volunteers helped as we built 2 large brick classrooms, and put in retaining walls to improve the state of the grounds. This was the first phase in making it a Ministry of Education "Model School."

2 - Ngungu School: Staff Latrines
Kenya, 2016, Sanitation
Ngungu School had no sanitary facilities as the latrines had been closed by the government. The students had to use the field as a bathroom, and many girls dropped out of school. The teachers had to use the church latrines so missed teaching time. We built a set of pit latrines and the school population started to grow again.

3 - Manyesa Computer Lab: Solar Electricity
Malawi, 2016, Education
We installed a solar electric system for all the classrooms at the newly built high school in Manyesa. It will power the lights we installed in the classrooms as well as the outside safety lights, and the 4 current computers. We also installed conduit and wiring for a lab with 20 computers that will be installed later.

4 - Little Angel Preschool: Upgrade

We upgraded Little Angel Preschool in Tembisa, a large township about an hour north of Jahannesburg. In addition to painting the preschool inside and out, and painting educational murals, we cleaned up the school yard, installed a jungle gym and water catchment system, and donated child sized tables and chairs.

5 - Kidebone's Preschool: Upgrade

Kidebone's Preschool needed a full renovation of the facilities and equipment. Inside, we repaired and painted the ceilings and walls, and installing new shelving. Then we added new child-sized tables, chairs and nap mats. Outside we painted and decorated, and installed a water catchment system and some playground equipment.

6 - Greater Glory Preschool: Upgrade

At Greater Glory Preschool we painted and decorated all the inside walls, repaired and painted ceilings, and installed new shelving. We also provided nap mats and educational supplies for the children. Ouside, we painted and added murals to walls, and installed a jungle gym, new play equipment and a water catchment system.

7 - Salome's Preschool: Upgrade

At Salome's Preschool we replaced some broken metal siding, a roof and windows. Then we painted educational murals, cleaned cleaned up the yard, set up a jungle gym and installed a water catchment system. TGUP student volunteers helped with all the work, and the following day went back and enjoyed playing with the children.

8 - Community Center: Upgrade

We fixed up the exterior of a building that is used as a community volunteer center. The volunteers based here work wherever they are most needed in the Tembisa Township of Johannesburg. The township has a population of almost 470,000 with very few services: no garbage pickup, and many areas without running water or electricity.

9 - Bali Phase 1: Latrines
Indonesia, 2016, Sanitation
The 17,000 residents of Ban were experiencing diarrhea, diphtheria and E.coli contamination, and children were dying. We built 24 engineered latrines, at $250 each, to insulate the water supply from human waste.

10 - Basteem: Birthing Center

We renovated a building in the rural area of Basteem, which is 2.5 hours away from the nearest clinic (via a dirt road). The new facility has a delivery room, post-delivery recovery room and storage, as well as a new toilet.

11 - Kot: Birthing Center

Kot is located 4 hours away from the nearest clinic (by dirt road). We expect about 100 pregnancies per year. We renovated a building designated by the DHO (Dept of Health) into a fully functioning and staffed birthing center.

12 - Pyauli: Birthing Center

The nearest clinic, in Bhojpur, is about 6 hours away on foot and 3 hours by vehicle (unaffordable for most). The population of Pyauli is 2,368 and the catchment population is about 11,139 with 281 expected pregnancies.

13 - Villa Japon: Classrooms

In 2013 the school had 250 students, 5 teachers and 5 classrooms. Enrollment has since increased by 50%, so in 2016 we built 3 classrooms with flexible interior walls so the building can also be used as a large auditorium.

14 - Orphanage: Medical Clinic
Myanmar, 2016, Health
We built a simple medical clinic for more than 230 orphans who had been abandoned and left on the streets of the city. It will provide basic medical care including vaccinations. Local medical staff are donating their time.
