In remote hamlets in the area of Ban in East Bali, Indonesia, nearly 95% of the families do not have toilets, running water or electricity. Illiteracy is close to 100%. The land and water then become contaminated by fecal matter. Sickness and death results from diarrhea, diphtheria, and E.coli. The problem is especially acute for children under 5.
All of the costs of the project are for materials: concrete blocks, cement, pipes and toilets. The local residents contribute all of the labor, roofing, doors and sand to the project. TGUP’s in-country partner, East Bali Poverty Project, oversees design and construction.
