Save a Girl ™ might be one of the most cost-effective programs for female empowerment ever devised. Think about it: keeping an adolescent girl in school for $2 per girl per year is one of the highest returns on human investment in the world. Only when females have the same education as males will they cease to be second class citizens. To date, we have helped more than 85,000 girls.

THE ARITHMETIC OF INFERIORITY

• Half of the world’s population—the female half—live as second-class citizens.  It begins the moment a girl drops out of school because she will ever after have less education than the boys.

WHEN AN ADOLESCENT GIRL DROPS OUT OF SCHOOL…..

• She’s more likely to be sold as a child bride or sold into the sex trade.  Even in the best cases, she faces relentless sexual predation, with few adults around to protect her. 

ECONOMIC DATA ARE CLEAR, AND UNCLEAR…..

• Higher national income is associated with lower discrimination against females.  What’s unclear is which causes which. 

CRAZY BUT TRUE…..

• Women are still discriminated against in many countries and societies because they menstruate.  Females shouldn’t be discriminated against just because humans need to procreate.    

HOW TRAGIC…..

• In Ivory Coast, only 2% of all girls graduate from high school.

SICKENING BUT TRUE…

Some girls are forced to “buy” sanitary supplies by providing sexual favors to “sellers.”  It’s the only way they can avoid missing a week per month of school.

THE WORLD BANK SAYS: …..

• Girls with more education:  have fewer sex partners; marry later; have fewer children; see that they are better educated; have better vocational options; and contribute more to their communities.

UNBELIEVABLE BUT TRUE……

In Nepal, some remote areas still practice ‘chaupadi’ where women are banished to animal sheds for the duration of their periods. 

MORE ARITHMETIC OF INFERIORITY……

Developing world women earn on average only 40% of what men make.  This makes women heavily dependent on men.  Part of the reason is that they almost always have less education than do men.  Keeping them in school helps narrow this gap. 

MUSCLES OF DESTINY……

As a nation’s work shifts from physical to intellectual, the inherent advantage men have declines.  Keeping girls in school is the best way to narrow the global gender-equality gap.

ROOTS OF DISCRIMINATION RUN DEEP……

Discrimination is not just economic or cultural.  Every major religion in the history of the world has discriminated against women because of menstruation.
