Managed by Kiini, our longtime partner in Kenya, nine beehives were installed for the local schools, villages, farms, and forests in Kenya.

  • Two hives Irigithathi Integrated School
  • Three hives Chieni School
  • One hive Thunguma Secondary School
  • Three hives Gatugi School
Irigithathi Integrated School – two hives

Irigithathi school is an integrated school based in Naromoru ward, Kieni constituency in Nyeri County. The school has 363 students, including those who are physically disabled. This is the school where TGUP recently completed construction of new dorm for boys, a new dorm for girls, a classroom, and new kitchen/dining hall.

The hives have been installed in the Kabiruini forest. The increased pollination will benefit nearby trees and crops, including coffee, vegetables, and fruit trees like mango and papaya. The hives and harvest will benefit the school through the sale of honey and the produce will be used to supplement the school meals.

Chieni School – three hives

Chieni is a comprehensive school (nursery, primary and junior secondary) based in Gatunganga location, Ruguru ward in Mathira constituency, Nyeri County. The school has 314 students (159 boys and 155 girls). The hives have been installed within the school compound for teaching, improved pollination, and honey production. The school grows fruit trees, maize, beans, and coffee. The sale of honey will supplement school expenses and the hives expect increased crop yields for the entire community.

Thunguma Secondary School – one hive

Thunguma Secondary school is located in Thunguma, Muruguru ward, Nyeri town Constituency in Nyeri County. The school has 330 students. The hive has been installed within the school compound, along with a hive from another donor, and will be used for teaching and practical examinations, especially to form 4 (grade 12) candidates who undertake Agriculture as a subject.

The hives will also improve pollination within Thunguma thus benefitting the entire community as well as both the Primary and Secondary Schools. Crops grown are coffee, maize, beans and bananas. The honey produced will generate extra income for the school.

The bottom level of the hive was first put in a tree and used as a catcher box to start a new colony

Gatugi School – three hives

Gatugi is a comprehensive school based in Thuti sublocation in Karima ward, Othaya Constituency in Nyeri County. The school has a population of 657 students. The school grows coffee, vegetables, and fruit trees in their school garden. The hives have been installed within the school compound for education, pollinator improvement and honey production. The sale of honey will supplement school learning expenses and the pollinator improvement will increase crop yields.
