The Monte Carmelo School in Peten, Guatemala has 87 students, from preschool to sixth grade. The community has 400+ people of Mayan Q’echi ethnicity. They speak their native Toltec language, as well as Spanish. They survive on subsistence agriculture and some trade with the outside world. Problems with the school included:
- Prior classroom was decrepit, with walls and roof that leaked water in the rain
- There were no desks
- There was no electricity, and the latrines were exhausted
TGUP committed to building two new classrooms of cinderblock on a poured concrete foundation. It will last more than 30 years. When the village mayor learned of the project, he committed to bringing in electricity and building flushing toilets.
